Blog Artist Artist Highlight | Priscilla Moreno

Priscilla makes art for the same reason we make skateboards; To put a smile on your face! That’s why we’re so stoked to introduce you to Priscilla Moreno, the women behind the art on our fall release board line! She’s into all things vintage from fashion to jazz music and Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining”. Her art pulls from her Mexican heritage and admiration for Frida Kahlo, Bossa Nova, and Alebrijes.

INSPIRATION

I like everything that is vintage! I like vintage movies, mostly horror movies. My favorite movie is The Shining, everything is so beautiful, especially the colours in the movie. I like retro fashion and also retro music, every time you come to my house my music is playing so loud, and I left it playing all day because it reminds me of my dad. He was like that, he was also one of my biggest inspirations, he was born in Tijuana, he was a skateboarder and an avid surfer, he brought this culture here (California) but a bit different since he was Mexican and I was born here. I am Chicana and that inspires me so much, specially jazz music and bossa nova, because it puts me in a very cool and retro mood, and it becomes my biggest inspiration.

Priscilla Moreno 》INTERVIEW

Team Rider Edd Aviña sat down with Priscilla Moreno, the artist of our Fall Release boards, to talk about art, life, skating, quarantine, cats and everything in between.

MEXICAN CULTURE

I love Mexican culture, I remember when I was a kid, I was born here (USA) and my parents were Mexican. My first language was Spanish, and I used to talk with kids at school, and there were times that I felt shy because they are US natives, but when I grew up I felt really happy to be Mexican. I went to Mexico City and visited the house of Frida Kahlo and I was so inspired and now I want to move down there to start doing more paintings, maybe leave work for a month, and just to create lots of stuff.

Mexico brings me so much inspiration because I like Alebrijes, cartoon creations, I love the colors and how they can be a bit spooky, so I like that too. I want to represent the person I am, I am Mexican, so I like to incorporate these elements in my art. I never want to forget where I come from.

CREATIVE PROCESS DURING QUARANTINE

It actually helped me. Before Quarantine I was working at a café, and during those times I had a lot of art shows on the side, in Fullerton. I am now in Long Beach, and I recently had a show that I named “The people of the city”. I was working, exhibiting, and creating art and I felt like I was too busy! And then the quarantine hit, and I stopped working, so I started creating a lot! I started being busy but now, with my art. So I’m grateful for that, then I thought, “ok well I’m gonna leave my job, and it’s very scary to do, but I’m doing it” and I did, and to this day I’ve been very busy with working on projects like this one with Landyachtz.

SKATEBOARDING CULTURE

I love to skate. I live near the ocean, so I walk around 5 minutes and I’m there, and there’s always skateboarders around. My boyfriend, he skateboards too, he was on the blind team in the 2000s. My dad used to surf and skate, so I got inspired by that culture because there’s a lot of music and art in skateboarding, so I liked it! I love the culture, when Landyachtz contacted me and asked me if I wanted to do this, I just loved it.

WHAT’S NEXT

I’d love to do a lot of stuff, there are many artists that want to focus on one thing only, but something I really like is to make people feel happy. I like to help kids by giving them art classes, or like this sweater. It’s in my store and it’s called “Los Muertos”. I’d like to make more clothes in my store and also make more paintings. I’d like to do many things! And now I have the time since I’m full time on my art. I love it.
