COUGAR BANDIT

By team rider and Landyachtz employee Lucas Greenough

In our opinion, this route incorporates the best parts of gravel riding at Burnaby Mountainit features some tough climbs that make it challenging for such a short ride. The highlight being a trail by the name of Side Bandit, an incredibly fun section of flowy single track on a gravel bike. Or, if you’re more vertically inclined then you’ll love the Cougar Climb: about 1km of 18% grade! It’s also a good route during the winter as most of the trails drain well.

This route starts out the same as the Port Moody Beer Run, making your way along the Trans Canada Trail towards Burnaby Mountain. Once you reach the mountain, you’ll weave your way along the north side of Hastings St and onto some gravel that spits you out at the Harry Jerome Sports Centre. You’ll follow the regular Mountain Air Trail, and onto the Barent Trail. After the steep descent on the Barnet Trail, you will come to a fork at the Suncor Station.

Take a left here, starting the tough Cougar Climb. On the Trans Canada Trail. The climb is a solid 1.2 km long, at a constant grade. Once you pop out underneath the hydro-lines, you’re almost done!! Keep pushing up that last section until you reach and nice little plateau. Catch your breath and have a drink, before moving into the next section.

One of the great things about this next portion is that, if you feel like riding some techy single track there’s some really fun trails along the leftif single track weirdness isn’t your jam, no worries just stay on the Power Line Trail until the sharp right corner. The route is set to take you through some single-track to help prevent people from getting turned around in there. That being said, if you’re feeling up to it, definitely spend some time exploring that lower trails, there’s lots of fun stuff. The route takes you on sections of the North Road Trail, a mellow, low angle section of single-track with some cool features.

When you exit this part and join up with the Pipeline Trail, you’ll follow it to the base of the last major climb of the day, the Sidewinder Climb. This one is a beautiful flowy climb, not too steep, with lots of corners and obstacles; a personal favorite of Lucas. The trail at the top is well worth the climb. This gem is called SIdebandit; a beautiful, flowy, hardpacked trail that traverses ever so slightly, downhill and spits you out onto Gagliardi Way. It’s perfect for all skill levels and is usually quiet, which lets you get some speed going if you want. In our eyes this is the main event of the ride!!

After Sidebandit, you’ll boot down the road, keeping an eye out on the right for the service road that you’ll jump onto. There is another section of single track here if you’re up for it. You’ll follow this to the golf course and weave your way back through Burnaby and to the shop.
